At Christmas, Santo Domingo combines what is there all year, the Zona Colonial with the first cathedral in the Americas, and a seasonal programme that in 2025 included the big tree on the Malecon, Villa Navidad at the Centro Olimpico, a craft fair in Plaza de Espana and the Turizoneando weekends in the Colonial City. The 2026 dates have not been announced yet, so this guide cites the 2025 edition with its source. From Punta Cana it is about 3 hours by bus, and we handle the ticket with an assisted booking from 19 USD per person.

The Zona Colonial: open all year
The Colonial City of Santo Domingo is a World Heritage Site. According to its UNESCO listing, checked on 22 October 2026, the city was founded in 1498, laid out on a grid, and was home to the first cathedral, hospital, customs house and university in the Americas. The cathedral is Santa Maria de la Encarnacion, known locally as the Catedral Primada de America, and UNESCO also cites the viceroy's palace, which is the Alcazar de Colon (that identification is ours, the listing does not name it). This is the plan that does not depend on any calendar: you explore it on foot, and in December it is also the setting for much of the capital's Christmas programme.
The Malecon tree and the George Washington avenue lights (2025)
In 2025 the city council (Alcaldia del Distrito Nacional) started its Christmas programme on Wednesday 26 November, when it lit a big tree in Plaza Santo Domingo, on the Malecon, according to Diario Libre of 26 November 2025. El Dia of 27 November 2025 adds that the lamp posts along George Washington avenue were decorated from Nunez de Caceres to the Obelisk and that the council published its park programme under Vive tu Parque. The tree looks best after dark, so it fits an evening walk along the Malecon. As of 22 October 2026 we have found no council announcement about a tree for 2026.
Villa Navidad at the Centro Olimpico (2025)
Villa Navidad is the government's Christmas park in the capital. The 2025 edition was opened by the president and the first lady on Monday 1 December at the Centro Olimpico Juan Pablo Duarte, with themed areas, lights, shows and activities for children and adults, according to El Dia of 1 December 2025. The Christmas programme the same paper published on 25 November 2025 placed it in the gardens of the Palacio de los Deportes, open until 5 January 2026. We found no dated source for the 2025 opening hours, so we do not give them. The 2026 edition is still to be confirmed.
Craft fair in Plaza de Espana and Christmas theatre (December 2025)
From 12 to 14 December 2025, Plaza de Espana in the Colonial City hosted the National Craft Fair (Feria Nacional de Artesania), back after eight years, with about 60 artisans from different regions of the country and open entry on all three days, according to elCaribe of 12 December 2025. The same El Dia programme listed the show Fantasia de Navidad at the Teatro Nacional on 21 December 2025. Neither has a 2026 date yet.
Santo Domingo at night: Turizoneando in the Colonial City
For the evening, the sourced plan is Turizoneando, run by the Ministry of Tourism. The edition that started on Friday 26 December 2025 ran until 26 April 2026, 18 weekends in a row, with concerts in Parque Colon, rock, jazz and the Las Mercedes church choir in Plaza Tirso de Molina and the Ruinas de San Francisco, a craft market and children's activities in Parque Duarte, longer museum hours and free bike tours, according to a Presidency note of 29 December 2025. Whether there will be a similar edition at Christmas 2026 is still to be confirmed.
What about Midnight Mass at the Catedral Primada?
We cannot give you a sourced time. We found no press report from December 2024 or December 2025 with the time of the Christmas Eve Mass at the Catedral Primada de America, and we will not copy one from an earlier year. If you want to attend, check the time on the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo channels in the days before.
Getting there from Punta Cana by bus: a day trip or a night in the capital
Punta Cana to Santo Domingo is about 200 km, and Expreso Bávaro gives a trip of approximately 3 hours on its website. Two different companies run the corridor, Expreso Bávaro and Expreso Punta Cana, and in Veron they pick up at different stops, so your confirmation says which company takes you and where to board. Expreso Bávaro asks you to be at the station at least one hour early, according to its FAQ. A return day trip means about 6 hours on the bus and leaves the morning and early afternoon for the Zona Colonial. The plans that look best after dark, the Malecon tree or the Turizoneando weekend concerts, call for one night in the capital and the bus back the next day. The way into Santo Domingo is often slow, so if you head back for a flight pick an early departure. We handle the ticket with an assisted booking from 19 USD per person.
Sources and how we checked
The Christmas events come from dated Dominican press: Diario Libre of 26 November 2025 and El Dia of 27 November (Malecon tree), El Dia of 25 November and 1 December 2025 (Villa Navidad and programme), elCaribe of 12 December 2025 (craft fair) and the Presidency note of 29 December 2025 (Turizoneando). The Zona Colonial facts come from the UNESCO listing. Everything was checked on 22 October 2026. We only cite editions with a source, and as of 22 October 2026 we have found no 2026 date. The travel time is the one Expreso Bávaro publishes and the distance is our estimate. We do not give departure times because we do not have a verified full timetable for this corridor. We are an independent intermediary with no agreement with the operators, and we are not the website of any transport company or public body.
