Punta Cana International Airport PUJ

The expanded Terminal B opened in July 2023 with over 90 million dollars invested, taking the airport to fourteen gates with air bridges. Grupo Puntacana is also adding an aircraft maintenance hub with FL Technics and a logistics free zone with DP World.

Las Americas International Airport SDQ

Aerodom is building a second terminal with over 400 million dollars invested and room for four million passengers a year, running independently of the current one. Ground level work started in January 2026, the main building structure in August 2026, and construction finishes in December 2028.

Cibao International Airport STI

The new terminal is under construction: 200 million dollars in a first phase due in summer 2027, lifting capacity to 4.2 million passengers a year. The full master plan aims at six million, triple what the current terminal was designed for.

Cabo Rojo International Airport CBJ

Cabo Rojo airport is not operating yet. The authorities put the start of operations in February 2027, with the runway already being paved. It is the missing piece of the Pedernales tourism development.

Does any intercity bus leave from inside a Dominican airport?

No. Not one air terminal in the country has a guagua stop inside the grounds. There is always a short taxi, Uber or private transfer leg between the airport and the city stop.

Which is the biggest airport in the Dominican Republic?

Punta Cana (PUJ), by a wide margin. In 2025 it took 5,275,492 foreign non-residents arriving by air, 71.9% of the 7,341,745 who entered the country by plane. Second is Las Americas (SDQ), in Santo Domingo, with 1,208,809.

How many airports does the Dominican Republic have?

Fourteen with an ICAO code. Nine take scheduled flights and have their own page here; the rest are aerodromes, private strips or facilities with no regular commercial traffic.

Can you get from Punta Cana airport to Santo Domingo by guagua?

Yes, but not straight from the terminal. First you reach the Bavaro stop at Cruce de Friusa, and the guagua to Santo Domingo leaves from there. The full trip runs around three hours plus the first transfer.

How early should I leave for a flight if I travel by guagua?

For an international flight, count about six hours between the guagua leaving and take-off: the ride itself, the transfer from the stop to the airport, and the two or three hours of check-in. Guaguas do not guarantee an arrival time.

Which airport suits Samana and Las Terrenas?

El Catey (AZS), on the peninsula itself, is the closest, but it takes few flights: 48,799 arrivals in 2025. Most travellers come in through Punta Cana or Santo Domingo and continue by road.

Is there a new airport on the way?

Cabo Rojo (CBJ), in Pedernales, with operations due to start in February 2027. It takes no passengers yet, so you cannot plan a trip from there.

How much does it cost to get from the airport to the city?

It depends on the airport and the destination, because the trip mixes a private transfer with the guagua ticket. We do not give a fixed price for trips touching an airport: it is worked out per request.
