If you are travelling alone or as a couple and you have no flight breathing down your neck, the answer is the guagua. It is not just the cheap option: it is the only one that shows you the country from the inside. Intercity guaguas are Dominican local networks, with their own terminals, their own timetables and their own passengers, and crossing the island on one is the difference between watching the Dominican Republic through a private car window and travelling the way people travel here.
Between the big cities you are on the main highway, in an air conditioned coach with a luggage hold and an assigned seat on the line operators. This is not the minibus that stops at every corner, even though both are called guagua here. You leave from a terminal, at a time, and you arrive at another terminal.
