Over the 2026 holidays the Dominican Republic's public holidays fall on Fridays: 25 December and 1 January, each with a long weekend. The eves, Thursday 24 and Thursday 31, are working days, so the rush out to the towns builds on those afternoons and it pays to travel on the 23rd or in the morning. In December 2025 the Dominican press did not report overwhelmed terminals, but it did see queues at some stops and more movement in the afternoon. We handle Santo Domingo to Santiago from 19 USD per person, with a full refund if we cannot get your ticket.
Christmas and New Year by bus in five facts
1. Friday 25 December 2026 is a fixed public holiday, according to the 2026 calendar published by Acento.
2. 1 January is fixed too, and in 2027 it falls on a Friday.
3. 6 January 2027, Three Kings Day, falls on a Wednesday and Law 139-97 moves such holidays to Monday, but the official 2027 calendar is not out yet.
4. On 23 December 2025 some Santo Domingo stops had queues and others were quiet, according to the Dominican press.
5. Caribe Tours lists 29 daily departures from Santo Domingo to Santiago and 34 back, with no special December timetable published.
Public holidays in December 2026 and January 2027
The 2026 holiday calendar, which Acento published on 4 May 2026 based on the Ministry of Labour dates, puts 25 December on a Friday with no move. Law 139-97, as explained by Revista Mercado on 22 April 2026, moves holidays that fall from Tuesday to Friday to the Monday, except the fixed ones, which include 1 January and 25 December. So the calendar runs like this: Thursday 24 December is not a holiday, Friday 25 is, and the long weekend runs from the 25th to Sunday 27. Thursday 31 is not a holiday either, Friday 1 January is, and the long weekend runs from the 1st to Sunday 3. Three Kings Day is the one to watch. In 2026 the Ministry of Labour moved it from Tuesday 6 to Monday 5 January, according to the same calendar. In 2027, 6 January falls on a Wednesday, so the likely outcome is a move to Monday 4 January, stretching the return weekend to that Monday. As of 22 October 2026 we have not found the official 2027 calendar, so check the date before you fix your return.
What the Dominican press saw at bus stops at Christmas 2025
December 2025 was not a picture of packed terminals. On 23 December, Diario Libre found the main Caribe Tours terminal in Santo Domingo quiet, with few people buying tickets, and a guagua stop for the Cibao with little movement. At the Aptrap terminal the flow was busier and the manager expected a big rise on the 24th. The same day, El Nuevo Diario described long queues at the Expreso Punta Cana offices and travellers with suitcases and shopping bags. The same report placed the start of the COE Christmas and New Year operation on that day. Separately, Digesett and Intrant carried out more than 2,236 bus inspections at 33 terminals around the country. El Día reported a slow morning at the Cibao stop, with more people expected in the afternoon once work let out. On 24 December, El Día visited a stop for Cibao routes and found it slower than in other years. Road traffic did grow: RD Vial counted 2,366,699 toll passages on national toll roads from 20 to 27 December 2025, against 1,913,921 in 2024, according to El Nuevo Diario on 28 December 2025. None of these reports mentions extra departures or added buses from the bus companies, so we do not count on them.
Which days to bring forward and when to leave
Our rule of thumb for December 2026, based on those reports and the calendar: if you can, travel out on Tuesday 22 or Wednesday 23, or on the morning of Thursday 24. The afternoon of the 24th, with people leaving work for their home towns, is the one to avoid. For New Year, bring it forward to Tuesday 29 or the morning of Wednesday 30, and avoid the afternoons of the 30th and 31st. Back in 2019 El Día described packed stops on 30 December, with people leaving Santo Domingo for their towns to see in the new year. Leave early: between Santo Domingo and Santiago, Caribe Tours lists departures from 06:00, and an early bus leaves room if the next one is full. Never count on the last departure of the day, which on this route is the 20:00 from Santo Domingo, because it leaves no plan B. We have not found any special December timetable published by Caribe Tours or Metro, so confirm the departure with the company before travelling on the 24th, 25th, 31st or 1st.
The Santo Domingo to Santiago timetable that is published
According to the Caribe Tours public timetable API, checked on 3 October 2026, there are 29 daily departures from its Santo Domingo terminal to Santiago, from 06:00 to 20:00, and the morning ones are listed at 3 hours. From Santiago to Santo Domingo there are 34, from 05:30 to 20:15, all at 3 hours. It is a general timetable, not a holiday one. Metro also links the two cities and publishes on its website a separate schedule for Sundays and public holidays, which in principle would apply on 25 December and 1 January. If you are flying in to Punta Cana, note that Expreso Bávaro does not sell online or in advance, according to its website: you buy the ticket at the station. We also handle Punta Cana to Santo Domingo from 19 USD and Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata from 24 USD per person.
Luggage and gifts on the December bus
In December the bus travels loaded: El Nuevo Diario saw suitcases and shopping bags on 23 December 2025, and El Día described suitcases, bundles and boxes in 2019. Each company sets its own luggage allowance and we have not found it published, so with boxes or more than one large suitcase it pays to arrive early. Anything fragile or valuable, such as electronics, perfume, cash and documents, stays with you in your hand luggage, never below. Boxes should be taped shut with your name and a phone number written on the outside. If you book with us, tell us in your request if you are carrying boxes or more than one large suitcase per person, and we pass on what the company tells us for that day, without promising that a given item will fit.
Coming back on 1, 2 and 3 January
For the return after New Year we have not found recent press reports with data from the terminals, so this is a cautious recommendation only. 1 January is a public holiday and many people spend it with family, and with the long weekend to Sunday 3, and possibly to Monday 4 if Three Kings Day moves, the return spreads over several days. The sensible choice is to travel back in the morning, on Saturday 2 or Sunday 3, rather than on the last afternoon of the long weekend. If you have a flight back abroad, leave at least one full day between the bus and the plane. A delay on the road in the middle of the return rush should not cost you your flight.
How to book from abroad
If you live abroad and come home in December, you can have the bus sorted before you fly. With our assisted booking you choose the route, the date and your preferred time, and for a fixed price trip the first email includes the payment link, by card or PayPal. Sending the request does not charge you or confirm a seat: the booking is confirmed when we issue the ticket, and you then get the booking number, the stop on Google Maps and the trip instructions. If we cannot get your ticket, we refund the full amount. Once issued, it is non-refundable, unless the bus company allows it or the law requires it. For these dates, send the request as soon as you have your flights. If you prefer to do it yourself, the Caribe Tours website has a booking form with date, name, number of tickets, email and phone, and when we checked on 22 October 2026 it showed no online payment.
Sources and how we checked
The 2026 public holidays come from the calendar published by Acento on 4 May 2026, and the move rule and fixed holidays from Revista Mercado on 22 April 2026. That Three Kings Day 2027 moves to Monday 4 January is our forecast based on Law 139-97 and the 2026 precedent, because the official 2027 calendar had not been published on 22 October 2026. What happened at the stops comes from Diario Libre and El Nuevo Diario of 23 December 2025, El Día of 23 and 24 December 2025 and of 31 December 2019, and the toll figure from RD Vial as quoted by El Nuevo Diario on 28 December 2025. The Caribe Tours times come from its public timetable API, checked on 3 October 2026, and its booking form from its website, checked on 22 October 2026. The days to bring forward are our rule of thumb, not company data. We are an independent intermediary with no agreement with the operators, and we are not the website of any transport company. We handle Santo Domingo to Santiago from 19 USD per person, with secure payment when you book and a full refund if we cannot get your ticket.
