Yes, you can take the bus from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo and come back the same day: each leg takes about 3 hours according to Expreso Bávaro, so the day means about 6 hours on the bus plus the buffer at the stop. That leaves time to explore the Colonial Zone on foot, a World Heritage Site, and with an early start Los Tres Ojos too. We handle both tickets with an assisted booking from 19 USD per person per leg.
The Santo Domingo day trip in five facts
1. Punta Cana to Santo Domingo is about 200 km and about 3 hours by bus each way.
2. Expreso Bávaro asks you to be at the stop at least one hour before each departure.
3. The Colonial Zone was founded in 1498 and has the first cathedral in the Americas, according to UNESCO.
4. Los Tres Ojos are caves with freshwater lagoons about five miles east of the city, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
5. A return trip means two tickets, and we handle both from 19 USD per person per leg.
How the day works: leave early, come back with time to spare
Do the maths like this. About 3 hours out and about 3 back, according to the Expreso Bávaro website, plus the hour of buffer the company asks for before each departure in its FAQ. Add the taxi or Uber from your hotel to the stop. Buses and buffers alone add up to about 8 hours, plus the taxis. With one of the first departures in the morning, which means leaving your hotel before dawn, and a mid-afternoon return, we estimate about 6 useful hours in the capital. Ask for the time of the last return of the day in your confirmation and do not cut it close: missing it means a night in Santo Domingo. Avoid heading back on a Friday afternoon, when the capital heads east to the beaches en masse, as our guide to Santo Domingo traffic explains. If you want the Colonial Zone and Los Tres Ojos without rushing, or the city after dark, stay one night in the capital and come back the next day.
What to see in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo
The Colonial City of Santo Domingo (Zona Colonial) is a World Heritage Site. According to UNESCO listing 526, checked on 22 October 2026, the city was founded in 1498 on a grid plan that became the model for almost every town planner in the New World, and it was home to the first cathedral, hospital, customs house and university in the Americas. UNESCO describes a 106 hectare area enclosed by walls, bastions and forts, with 116 blocks, and among its buildings it cites the cathedral of Santa Maria de la Encarnacion, known locally as the Catedral Primada de America, the Monastery of San Francisco, the viceroy's palace, the fortress of Santo Domingo with its Torre del Homenaje and the Real Audiencia. It is all walkable, which makes it the plan that fits a day trip best: you get out of the taxi and walk.
Los Tres Ojos: caves and lagoons in Santo Domingo Este
Los Tres Ojos are in the municipality of Santo Domingo Este, across the Ozama River. The official Ministry of Tourism page places them about five miles east of the city and describes a staircase down into a series of caves with three blue freshwater lagoons, the eyes, plus a fourth lagoon reached by a small wooden barge, in an open setting full of vegetation. It adds that the Taino used these caverns for refuge or rituals. The location page of DGCINE, the Dominican film directorate, names the lakes: La Nevera, the coldest and deepest at 5.4 metres, the Sulphur lake (Azufre), Las Damas and Los Zaramagullones, which is in the open air. We do not give an entrance fee or opening hours because we found no dated official source, so check them on arrival.
Getting around Santo Domingo: taxi or Uber
The bus from Punta Cana ends in central Santo Domingo, and the exact stop comes with your ticket. From there we estimate about 10 minutes by taxi or Uber to the Colonial Zone. To reach Los Tres Ojos you cross one of the bridges over the Ozama, which are a bottleneck at rush hour, so leave a margin to get back to the stop. We do not quote taxi or Uber fares because they change with the time and the traffic. In a taxi, agree the price before you get in, and in the app you see it when you request the ride. An easy order is to start with Los Tres Ojos and leave the Colonial Zone, which you do on foot, for the rest of the day.
Organised tour or independent bus trip
A day tour from Punta Cana picks you up at the hotel and comes with a guide, which is worth something if you do not want to organise anything. By bus you go on your own: you choose what to see and for how long, eat where you like and pay only for transport. This guide does not quote tour prices because every operator changes its own. If what you want is the Colonial Zone at your own pace, the bus is the simple way to get there.
How to book the return bus
Guagualine handles this route with two different companies, Expreso Bávaro and Expreso Punta Cana, which pick up at different stops in Veron, so your confirmation says which company takes you and where to board. Expreso Bávaro does not sell return tickets, according to its FAQ, so the way back is a second ticket. We handle both with an assisted booking from 19 USD per person per leg, with secure payment and a full refund if we cannot get your ticket. If you come back the same day, the Santo Domingo day trip pack combines both legs for 20% less than two separate tickets. For everything else about the route, luggage, stops or the airport, see our full guide to the Punta Cana to Santo Domingo bus.
Sources and how we checked
The travel time and the one hour buffer are the ones Expreso Bávaro publishes on its website and in its FAQ. The Colonial Zone facts come from UNESCO listing 526, and the Los Tres Ojos facts from the official Ministry of Tourism page and the location page of DGCINE, the Dominican film directorate. Everything was checked on 22 October 2026. The distance and the transfer time to the Colonial Zone are our estimates. We do not give departure times: Expreso Bávaro does not publish a timetable and Expreso Punta Cana does, so the exact time comes in your confirmation. Nor do we give prices for entry, taxis or tours without a dated source. We are an independent intermediary with no agreement with the operators, and we are not the website of any transport company or public body.
