Quick answer

Christmas in the Dominican Republic peaks on the night of 24 December, Nochebuena, with a family dinner of roast pork, moro de guandules (rice with pigeon peas), pasteles en hoja and Russian salad, and the season runs until Three Kings' Day on 6 January. The 25th is a public holiday, and in 2026 it falls on a Friday, according to the Ministry of Labour. If you travel by bus between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo over those days, go in the morning on the 24th and the 31st. We handle the ticket from 19 USD per person.

Christmas in the Dominican Republic in five facts

1. The big night is 24 December, Nochebuena, with dinner at home and Midnight Mass (Misa de Gallo) in Catholic churches.
2. 25 December is a public holiday that is never moved: in 2026 it is Friday the 25th.
3. The season starts early: El Día puts the start in October, when radio stations start playing Christmas songs.
4. It ends on 6 January, Three Kings' Day, when in many homes children get their presents.
5. Between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo neither of the two bus companies we book with has published a Christmas timetable, and we handle the ticket from 19 USD per person.

When is Christmas in the Dominican Republic?

Earlier than most visitors expect. According to El Día (21 December 2022), the celebrations begin two months before December, in October, when radio stations start playing Christmas songs. Decorating the house comes later, closer to the date. The heart of it all is Nochebuena, the night of the 24th, not the 25th. 25 December is an official public holiday that is never moved to another day: in 2026 it falls on a Friday, according to the Ministry of Labour holiday list published on 5 November 2025. 24 and 31 December are not on that list, 1 January is. The season ends with Three Kings' Day on 6 January. Watch that one, because Law 139-97 allows it to be moved to a Monday: in 2026, Tuesday the 6th was a working day and the day off moved to Monday the 5th. 6 January 2027 falls on a Wednesday and may move to a Monday, but the calendar the Ministry of Labour publishes is what counts.

How Dominicans celebrate Christmas: dinner, Midnight Mass and angelito

The table on the 24th varies from home to home, but Dominican sources keep naming the same dishes. El Día lists telera (a large bread loaf), stuffed turkey, pasteles en hojas (filled parcels wrapped in leaves), Russian salad, moro de guandules, roast leg of pork and chicken, with sweets and fruit such as apples and grapes. Diario Libre (23 December 2019) puts pork at the centre and adds ponche, the Christmas punch. The same article describes Midnight Mass on the 24th in Catholic churches as the most sacred of the Christmas celebrations, although fewer people attend each year. Angelito is the Dominican Secret Santa: names are written on slips of paper, drawn at random, and everyone gives a present to the person they drew. El Día places it mostly among coworkers, from early December to the last working day of the month, and Diario Libre among friends and family too. Some families travel to the countryside to spend the holidays with relatives, and relatives living abroad arrive days before the 24th, according to El Día.

Aguinaldos and Three Kings' Day

Aguinaldos are groups of friends going from house to house singing Christmas carols to the güira and the tambora drum, according to El Día. Diario Libre adds that the host usually offers ginger tea or hot chocolate, that many visits are a surprise, and that the custom has faded in recent years because of security concerns. The season closes on 6 January. Children write a letter to Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar, leave it under the tree or hand it to their parents, and wait for their presents that day. A child who gets nothing on the 6th may still get a gift from La Vieja Belén, who has no fixed date, according to the same article.

How do you say Merry Christmas in the Dominican Republic?

The same as anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world: 'Feliz Navidad'. A recent example is the message from President Luis Abinader and the First Lady, who closed their 2025 greeting with '¡Feliz Navidad y un año nuevo cargado de esperanzas!' (Merry Christmas and a new year full of hope), according to El Nuevo Diario (25 December 2025). For a traveller, a 'Feliz Navidad' to the driver or at the bus stop is all you need.

Punta Cana and Santo Domingo weather at Christmas

December is warm and drier than autumn: Punta Cana gets 91.3 mm of rain against 131.1 in November. At the Punta Cana station the average daily high for the month is 29.4 °C (85 °F). In Santo Domingo the average high is 30.6 °C (87 °F) and the average low 21.9 °C (71 °F), with 76.5 mm (3.0 in). These are 30 year averages, 1991 to 2020, from the WMO climate normals for ONAMET stations published by NOAA, not a forecast. The Atlantic hurricane season ends on 30 November, according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center, so the holidays fall outside it.

Punta Cana to Santo Domingo by bus over Christmas

We book this route with two different companies that are often mixed up, Expreso Bávaro and Expreso Punta Cana, and in Veron they do not pick up at the same stop. It is about 200 km, and Expreso Bávaro gives a trip of approximately 3 hours on its website. Expreso Bávaro does not sell tickets in advance or online and asks you to be at the station at least one hour before departure, according to its FAQ page, checked on 22 October 2026. Expreso Punta Cana does sell on its website. Neither has published a Christmas timetable: Expreso Bávaro publishes no times at any time of year, and a search for 'navidad' on the Expreso Punta Cana website returned nothing on 22 October 2026. That is why this post gives no special times. On demand, on 23 December 2025 El Nuevo Diario saw long queues at the Expreso Punta Cana offices, with passengers carrying suitcases and food. The same day Diario Libre found little movement at the big Santo Domingo terminals but somewhat more at the one for buses to the east, with passengers heading to Higuey and more traffic expected on the 24th. Our advice: on the 24th travel in the morning so you reach dinner with time to spare, and do the same on the 31st if you have plans that night. If you have a flight from Santo Domingo afterwards, leave plenty of margin: see Santo Domingo traffic.
