Quick answer

For travel between cities in the Dominican Republic, the bus is the cheapest option: Punta Cana to Santo Domingo takes roughly 3 hours, according to the operator, and with assisted booking costs from 25 USD per person. Uber and taxis cover the short ride to the stop. A private transfer, which on that route we estimate from 125 USD per vehicle (our own July 2026 estimate), makes sense for families, night arrivals or heavy luggage.

When the bus is the best choice

The bus wins on almost every long daytime trip. These are coaches with assigned or numbered seats depending on the operator, air conditioning and a luggage hold. The condition is that you adapt to their rhythm: fixed departure times, arriving early at the stop and, on your own, carrying pesos in cash.

Solo or as a couple: bus plus Uber to the stop

If you travel solo or as a couple with normal luggage, the combination that works best is Uber or taxi to the stop and the bus for the long leg. From Punta Cana airport to the stop in Bávaro it is about 20 minutes by Uber or official taxi. From the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, the bus terminals are 10 to 15 minutes away. The exact point and time come with your booking confirmation. Adding the city ride and the bus, two people cross half the country for less than a private transfer usually costs for one. In exchange you accept fixed departure times and a stop that is sometimes a street corner rather than a building.

Families and groups: when a private transfer pays off

With three or four people the maths changes, because a private transfer is priced per vehicle and the bus per person. By our July 2026 estimate, which is not a quote, a private transfer from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo runs about 125 to 200 USD per vehicle, and from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas about 200 to 260 USD. For a family of four with assisted booking, the Punta Cana to Santo Domingo bus costs from 100 USD in total, plus city taxis. In exchange, the transfer collects you at the hotel door and does not ask you to wait at a stop. Our rule: with small children or more than one change of vehicle, consider the transfer. With teenagers and reasonable luggage, the bus is the better deal.

Big luggage: what fits in each option

Caribe Tours and Expreso Bávaro coaches have a luggage hold, so one large suitcase and one carry-on per person usually travel without trouble. Association buses, like the Asotrapusa service to Las Terrenas, have luggage space that is not guaranteed. If you carry a surfboard, a bicycle or more than two large suitcases, ask ahead or go straight to a private transfer. With Uber the limit is the boot of the car you are assigned: with two large suitcases request the higher category, which in Punta Cana is usually called Uber Select. One practical detail: street stops have no left-luggage service, so do not turn up two hours early with everything on your back.

At night and at dawn: taxi, transfer or wait until morning

The first departure is usually early in the morning and the last ranges from mid afternoon to evening depending on the route, and we never suggest the last departure of the day because it leaves no plan B if something goes wrong. If your flight lands at night in Punta Cana or Las Americas, you have two sensible paths: sleep near the airport and take the bus the next morning, or book a private night transfer. The official airport taxi runs at any hour, but for 200 km the fare gets close to a transfer. If you want us to line up the next morning bus, Guagualine assisted booking starts at 25 USD per person, with secure payment when you book and a full refund if we cannot get your ticket, and we answer by WhatsApp or email.

Frequently asked questions

What is the bus from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo like in the Dominican Republic?
It is 200 km and roughly 3 hours, according to the operator. Two separate companies run this corridor, Expreso Bávaro and Expreso Punta Cana. The one that takes you is the one shown on your ticket. With assisted booking it costs from 25 USD per person, ticket included.
Is Uber cheaper than the bus between cities in the Dominican Republic?
Usually not. Over 200 km an Uber fare gets close to a private transfer, which on that route we estimate at 125 to 200 USD, and some drivers may decline the trip. The bus is far cheaper per person.
When is a private transfer worth it instead of the bus in the Dominican Republic?
With 3 or 4 people, small children, a night arrival or more than 2 large suitcases per person. From Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas we estimate a transfer at 200 to 260 USD per vehicle.
Can I take an Uber to the bus stop in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic?
Yes, if a driver is available at that moment. From the airport to the stop in Bávaro it is about 20 minutes. The exact point comes with your booking confirmation. Depending on the driver and the moment, you may be asked to walk out of the airport grounds for pick-up.
Are there night buses between cities in the Dominican Republic?
Into the evening on some routes: Caribe Tours publishes departures from Santo Domingo to Santiago until 20:00 and from Santiago to Puerto Plata until 22:00. We know of no overnight service. If you land at night, the usual answer is to sleep near the airport and take the next day's bus, or book a private night transfer.
How much luggage can I take on intercity buses in the Dominican Republic?
On Caribe Tours and Expreso Bávaro coaches, one large suitcase and one carry-on per person usually go in the hold without trouble. On Asotrapusa buses to Las Terrenas space is tighter, so with 2 large suitcases it is worth asking first.
