To travel by bus from Punta Cana airport (PUJ) to Santo Domingo, the usual way is an Uber or taxi to the bus stop in the Bávaro area, about 20 minutes away, then roughly 3 hours on the coach, according to the operator, to central Santo Domingo. If you are leaving from the airport, tell us when you book and we will confirm where to board.
First leg: from the airport to the stop in Bávaro
The bus stop is in the Bávaro area, about 20 minutes from the airport. The exact spot and time come with your booking confirmation. You can request an Uber or take an official taxi outside arrivals. Depending on the driver and the time of day, you may be asked to walk outside the airport grounds for pickup, so check the app for the exact pickup point before you walk out with your bags.
How long the bus takes and what it costs
The trip covers about 200 km on the Autopista del Coral and the Autopista del Este, and the operator speaks of roughly 3 hours, a little more with traffic at the entrance to the capital. Two separate companies run this corridor, Expreso Bávaro and Expreso Punta Cana, and the one that takes you is the one shown on your ticket. On your own, Expreso Bávaro does not sell online or in advance, according to its website: you buy at the station, where it asks you to arrive 1 hour early. We recommend withdrawing pesos at an airport ATM before getting into the Uber. The air conditioning on board is usually strong, so keep a light jacket handy. With Guagualine's assisted booking the trip costs from 25 USD per person, ticket included.
How much buffer to leave after landing
This is where most travellers get it wrong. Getting off the plane, clearing immigration, collecting bags and finding your car takes a good while, especially in high season. Add the 20 minutes to the stop and the buffer the company asks for: Expreso Bávaro asks on its website for you to be there 1 hour early. Our rule is to leave at least 3 hours between landing and the departure you want. We confirm the departure that fits your flight when you book.
Where you arrive in Santo Domingo and what comes next
The bus ends in central Santo Domingo, and the exact stop comes with your ticket. From the centre, the Colonial Zone is about 10 minutes by Uber or taxi, and Piantini or Naco about the same in the other direction. If you arrive at night, order the car from inside the terminal and wait until it shows up in the app, and if you take a taxi, agree the price before you get in. If you are continuing to Las Terrenas or Puerto Plata the same day, remember those buses leave from other parts of the city.
Bus, private transfer or assisted booking
A private transfer from the airport to Santo Domingo costs roughly 125 to 200 USD per vehicle (our own July 2026 estimate, not a quote), and it is the sensible choice for groups of three or more or for night arrivals. Solo or as a couple, the bus plus the Uber to the stop costs far less. If you would rather not sort anything out on the spot, our assisted booking starts at 25 USD per person, with secure payment when you book and a full refund if we cannot get your ticket, and we reply by WhatsApp or email with the plan for the day, the departure that fits and the buffer we recommend for your flight. We are an independent intermediary, not the operator.
