First leg: from the airport to the Friusa stop

The Expreso Bavaro stop is at Cruce de Friusa, in Bavaro, about 20 minutes from the airport. You can request an Uber or take an official taxi outside arrivals. Depending on the driver and the time of day, you may be asked to walk outside the airport grounds for pickup, so check the app for the exact pickup point before you walk out with your bags. Tell the driver Cruce de Friusa, Expreso Bavaro stop, and they will know it. This is a street stop rather than an enclosed terminal, so once you arrive ask the operator's staff which bus goes to Santo Domingo and where to pay for the ticket.

How long the bus takes and what it costs

The trip is about 200 km along the Coral and Este highways, and the operator covers it in around 190 minutes, a bit over 3 hours if traffic into the capital behaves. Works out at about 7 to 9 USD per person. Expreso Bavaro does not sell online and only takes cash on board, so withdraw pesos at an airport ATM before getting into the Uber. Small notes help. The air conditioning on these coaches tends to be strong, so keep a light layer within reach. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.

How much buffer to leave after landing

This is where most travelers get it wrong. Between leaving the plane, immigration, baggage and finding your ride, 45 minutes to an hour and a half can go by in high season. Add the 20 minutes to Friusa and the full hour the operator asks you to be at the stop before departure. Our rule is to leave at least 3 hours between your landing time and the departure you want. According to what the operator publishes, departures tend to be spread through the day roughly every 2 hours, with the last one mid afternoon, but that has not been confirmed by phone, so check the day's timetable at the stop itself.

Where you arrive in Santo Domingo and what comes next

The coach ends at the Expreso Bavaro terminal on Calle Juan Sanchez Ramirez, in the Gazcue neighborhood near Avenida Maximo Gomez. It is a central, quiet area. From there the Colonial Zone is about 10 minutes by Uber or taxi, and Piantini or Naco about the same in the opposite direction. If you arrive after dark, request the car from inside the terminal and wait until it shows up in the app rather than taking an unmetered taxi at the door. If you plan to continue to Las Terrenas or Puerto Plata the same day, keep in mind those buses leave from other points in the city.

Bus, private transfer or assisted booking

A private transfer from the airport to Santo Domingo costs between 125 and 200 USD approx. per vehicle, and it is the sensible choice for groups of three or more or for night arrivals.
