Intercity buses in the Dominican Republic tend to make their last departure mid afternoon, and we know of no night services on the Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Las Terrenas, Santiago and Puerto Plata routes. If you land after 5 pm you have three ways out: sleep nearby and take a morning bus, a private transfer from 90 to 125 USD approx. depending on the route, or rethink the first day.
Why we never plan around the last departure of the day
Our golden rule is to never build a trip on the last bus of the day, and with a flight involved, even less so. A 40 minute delay on landing, a long immigration line or a bag that takes its time on the belt turn a tight plan into a night with no transport. That is why we always aim for the departure before the last one, and keep the last one as plan B. On paper, the routes we cover end service mid afternoon, between 4 and 6 depending on the operator and direction, though that has not been confirmed by phone. Check the day's timetable before you leave the airport.
First check whether you have really missed it
Before deciding anything, confirm the real situation. Timetables published on operator websites are not always current, and some guaguas leave when they fill up. Call the terminal or ask the taxi driver, who usually knows whether the last one has gone. Caribe Tours answers by phone on 809-221-4422 and Asotrapusa on 829-387-5682. Expreso Bavaro has no public phone number in our data, so there the only check is going to the Friusa stop. If a departure remains and you have time, remember operators ask for 30 to 60 minutes of early arrival, so do not turn up at a sprint.
Option 1: sleep nearby and take the bus in the morning
This is the cheapest option and the one with the fewest surprises. Near each airport there is reasonably priced lodging: Bavaro for PUJ, Boca Chica or central Santo Domingo for SDQ, Santiago for STI and Puerto Plata for POP. Services start early in the morning, so if you sleep next to the stop you leave first thing and reach your destination before lunch. A simple hotel costs less than most night transfers, and arriving in daylight at a street stop like Asotrapusa or Friusa is far easier than doing it in the dark with luggage.
Option 2: private transfer or long distance taxi
When there are three or more of you, or when the hotel at your destination is already paid, a private transfer can make sense. The reference prices we work with are between 125 and 200 USD approx. from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo, between 200 and 260 approx. from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas and between 90 and 130 approx. from Santiago to Puerto Plata, always per vehicle. At night the price rises and mountain roads, like Santiago to Puerto Plata, get slower. Agree the price and the exact drop off point before getting in, and share the trip with someone you trust. With an airport taxi, insist on an official taxi and a fixed price.
How to avoid it next time, and how we help
The problem almost always starts when the flight is booked without checking the last bus. If your flight lands after 2 or 3 pm at an airport that is not your final destination, assume you will sleep near the airport or pay for a transfer, and decide with that in mind.
