Quick answer

From Cibao airport (STI) to Puerto Plata by bus takes about 2 and a half hours in total: a 20 minute taxi to the Caribe Tours terminal in Santiago, 45 minutes of early arrival and around 90 minutes on the coach for the 65 km. For Sosua add a bit over half an hour by local guagua or taxi from Puerto Plata.

Why so many north coast travelers land in Santiago

Cibao airport handles around 1 million passengers a year, with many flights from New York and Miami used by the Dominican diaspora. It is often cheaper than flying into Puerto Plata (POP), which is why people headed to Sosua or Cabarete end up landing here. The difference is that POP sits about 20 minutes from the Puerto Plata terminal, while from STI you have to cross the Cordillera Septentrional. Before booking the flight, weigh the saving against the extra 2 and a half hours and the cost of the taxi from the airport, which is not a small number.

From the airport to the Caribe Tours terminal in Santiago

The Caribe Tours terminal is on Avenida 27 de Febrero, in the Las Colinas area of Santiago de los Caballeros, about 20 minutes from the airport by taxi. Official taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree the price before getting in and say clearly Caribe Tours terminal in Las Colinas. Caribe Tours asks you to be there 45 minutes before departure. There is a ticket counter at the terminal, but do not assume it takes cards: carry pesos in cash for the ticket, the taxi and the local guagua later on. If you land in the late afternoon, the connection gets tricky and we cover that below.

The bus to Puerto Plata: 65 km in about 90 minutes

Caribe Tours covers the 65 km between Santiago and Puerto Plata in about 90 minutes over a mountain road, with bends and a few slow stretches. According to what the operator publishes, service on this corridor runs roughly hourly during the day, with the last departure mid afternoon, but we have not confirmed that by phone, so check the day's timetable at the terminal. The coach arrives at the Caribe Tours terminal on Calle Camino Real in Puerto Plata, a few minutes by taxi from the Malecon. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.

Last leg: from Puerto Plata to Sosua or Cabarete

The Caribe Tours coach does not continue to Sosua. From the Puerto Plata terminal, Sosua is a bit over half an hour by local guagua or taxi, and Cabarete a little beyond. The local guagua is the cheap option and leaves from the main road. Ask at the terminal for the guagua to Sosua and they will point you to the spot. With large bags or after dark, a taxi is more comfortable and the price is agreed before you get in. If you are going to Cabarete, tell the driver your hotel name, the road runs through town and they can drop you at the door.

When the bus wins, when the transfer wins and how we help

A private transfer from Santiago to Puerto Plata costs between 90 and 130 USD approx. per vehicle, and a bit more to Sosua or Cabarete. For one person or a couple on a morning flight, the bus plus the airport taxi comes to a fraction of that. For a family with surfboards or an afternoon flight, the transfer keeps the connection safe. If you would like us to look at it with you, our assisted booking starts at 24.95 USD per person, is requested 3 or more days ahead, nothing is paid when you request it, and we reply by WhatsApp or email. We are independent intermediaries, the ticket is issued by Caribe Tours.
