How to pay for the bus in the Dominican Republic

Of the operators we cover, the only one with a confirmed policy is Expreso Bavaro: no online sales and cash only, paid on board between Cruce de Friusa and Gazcue. Asotrapusa charges at its street stop on Calle Barahona, also in cash. Caribe Tours and Metro sell at a terminal counter, and even if a card terminal is there, we do not take it for granted: the system can be down or the morning shift may not have one. Our rule is to carry pesos for the fare with any of the four. These are local transport companies selling at a window to Dominican passengers, not platforms built for tourists. The currency is the Dominican peso. Carrying the exact amount, or close to it, saves the conductor hunting for change. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.

How much cash to carry per trip

No intercity leg is expensive next to a private transfer, but the cash has to be in your pocket from day one. Budget for the fare, the taxi or Uber to the terminal, water and one surprise. All in pesos and in small notes, because at a street stop first thing in the morning nobody breaks a large one. Dollars, euros and where to change money

In the Punta Cana area many shops accept dollars, and sometimes the bus helper does too, but at whatever rate they decide, which is usually worse than the official one and with no change given back in dollars. With euros it is even less common. The clean way is to withdraw pesos at an airport or hotel ATM when you land, or change at a bank or exchange office in town. Take out only what the first few days need: ATMs charge a withdrawal fee and the peso is useless outside the country. If you land on a Sunday or at night, the airport ATM is your only option before the terminal, so use it even if the fee stings.

Cards and online purchase: what exists and what does not

Only Caribe Tours has its own online sales, and they are limited: not every route or departure is listed, and its web timetables are not kept up to date. Metro, Expreso Bavaro and Asotrapusa do not sell online. That means for almost any trip you buy in person, on the day, 30 minutes to 1 hour before departure depending on the operator. There is no remote seat reservation that guarantees a place on a specific bus: whoever arrives buys, and when the bus is full, the next one. That is why on long weekends and holidays it makes sense to go for the first departure of the morning and not the last, which is the one that sells out.

How our assisted booking works with payment

Our assisted booking costs from 24.95 USD per person, is requested 3 or more days ahead, and nothing is paid at the time of the request. We are an independent intermediary with no commercial agreement with the operators, so you pay the bus ticket to the operator yourself, in pesos and almost always in cash, like any other passenger. What we do is confirm with you on WhatsApp or email the exact stop, how much cash to carry that day, what time to show up and what to do if the bus is full. We will never ask for your card number over chat or tell you the ticket is already paid: if someone does that in our name, it is not us.
