What works: the scheduled coach is the calm option

Caribe Tours, Metro and Expreso Bavaro move thousands of Dominicans every day between Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Romana and Punta Cana. These are companies with decades of history, a professional driver, an air conditioned coach with a locked hold, and a fixed fare at the counter, so there is no haggling and no surprise when you get off. Compared with renting a car without knowing the roads, or a private transfer of 125 to 200 USD from Punta Cana. What you should not expect is clockwork punctuality: the bus leaves when it is due or when it fills, and on the road there are stops and traffic. With time to spare, it is an uneventful trip. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.

Daytime yes, night time better not

Almost every line concentrates its departures between early morning and mid afternoon, and the last departure of the day is the one that fills up and, if it fails, leaves you with no plan B. That is why in our bookings we never propose the last departure: always the one before, so that a next one exists. A 4 hour Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata leaving mid afternoon drops you at the terminal after dark, and that is where a new arrival gets into trouble: taxis with no meter, a hotel that is hard to find, a poorly lit street. The goal is to step off the bus in daylight, even if that means an early start. Check the timetable for the day at the terminal or by phone, because online timetables, including the operators' own, are not always current.

At the terminal and at the street stop

The Caribe Tours terminals in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata and La Romana have a waiting room, a ticket counter and staff, and are places where you can wait calmly with your suitcase. Street stops are a different matter: the Asotrapusa stop for Las Terrenas is a spot on Calle Barahona 129, behind Plaza Lama, and Expreso Bavaro's Cruce de Friusa in Bavaro is a road junction. There the rule is simple: suitcase between your legs, phone in a front pocket, and no accepting help from anyone offering to carry your bag to the bus who is not the driver's helper. Arriving with the 30 to 60 minutes of margin each operator asks for, and not two hours, keeps your time on the street short.

On board: what stays on you and what does not

Passport, money, phone and camera stay with you in the seat, never in the hold, which is opened at intermediate stops. The small backpack is better between your feet or on your lap than on the overhead rack, especially if you plan to sleep on a 3 or 4 hour trip. The air conditioning on the coaches is strong, so a light layer keeps you from stepping off chilled. If the bus stops for food, take your valuables with you. Keep a copy of your passport on your phone in case a road checkpoint asks for it: it is routine on some stretches and no cause for alarm. And keep the hold stub, which on Caribe Tours and Metro is what they check before handing back your suitcase.

On arrival: the taxi, the Uber and our part

The moment with the most room for error is leaving the terminal. Uber works in Santo Domingo, Santiago and Punta Cana, and it is best ordered from inside the terminal. Depending on the driver and the moment, you may be asked to step outside the grounds for pickup. Where the app has no coverage, take the terminal's official taxi with the price agreed before you get in. Turn down anyone approaching with an unmarked taxi.
