Uber in the Dominican Republic: where it works or not

Where Uber works normally: Santo Domingo and Punta Cana

The two areas where Uber behaves like it does in any large city are Santo Domingo and the Punta Cana, Bavaro and Veron corridor. In the capital it covers almost everything a passing traveller needs: airport to city centre in 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic, and Colonial Zone to the bus terminals in 10 to 15 minutes, both to Caribe Tours on 27 de Febrero and to Expreso Bavaro in Gazcue. In Punta Cana it covers the ride between the Bavaro hotels and the Cruce de Friusa stop, about 15 to 20 minutes. The price of a city ride depends on distance and time of day, the app shows it before you request and charges your card, which saves you haggling over the fare.

Airports: pick-up depends on the driver

At Punta Cana airport, which handles 51% of the country's air arrivals, pick-up depends on the driver and the moment: you may be asked to walk out of the grounds, a few minutes on foot from the terminal. The same applies, with nuances, at Las Americas and La Isabela, the two Santo Domingo airports. The official airport taxi is always there and is the no-surprises option if you have just landed without mobile data. Our advice for day one: activate an eSIM or wifi before you leave the arrivals area, request the Uber calmly and, if no driver shows up within 10 minutes, switch to the official taxi. From Punta Cana airport to the bus stop it is about 20 minutes with either.

Bavaro hotels and resorts: the lobby and the gate

Two realities coexist at the Bavaro resorts. Hotel taxis have an agreed fare and wait in the lobby, and Uber exists but with variable access: depending on the driver and the moment, you may be asked to walk out to the gate of the complex. If your resort is large, that gate can be a 10 minute walk with suitcases under the sun, so ask the driver through the app chat or take the hotel taxi. To reach the Expreso Bavaro stop at Cruce de Friusa allow 15 to 20 minutes from most hotels in the area. One tip that avoids arguments: confirm the exact pick-up point with reception before you request the ride.

Where not to rely on Uber: Las Terrenas, Samana, the north coast and Bayahibe

On the Samana peninsula and along the north coast the app is not a dependable plan. In Las Terrenas the town centre is walkable and the nearby beaches are a few minutes away by motoconcho. From Samana El Catey airport to Las Terrenas it is about 40 minutes along the Boulevard Turistico, by taxi or pre-arranged transfer. In Puerto Plata the airport is about 20 minutes by taxi from the Caribe Tours terminal, and from Cabarete or Sosua you get there by local guagua or taxi in a bit over half an hour. In La Romana and Bayahibe the taxi rules, about 15 minutes from the airport to the centre. In Santiago the app usually operates in the city, but for Cibao airport the figure we work with is a taxi, about 20 minutes.

Uber between cities: why it rarely pays off

Requesting an Uber to cross the country is possible in theory and disappointing in practice. For the 200 km from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo the fare gets close to a private transfer, which runs about 125 to 200 USD per vehicle, and some drivers may decline the trip because they have no return passenger.
