When the bus is the best choice

The bus wins on almost every long daytime trip. These are coaches with assigned or numbered seats depending on the operator, air conditioning and a luggage hold. The condition is that you adapt to their rhythm: daytime departures, arriving early at the stop and paying in cash in pesos with two of the three operators. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.

Solo or as a couple: bus plus Uber to the stop

If you travel alone or as a couple with normal luggage, the combination that works best is Uber or taxi to the stop and the bus for the long leg. From Punta Cana airport to the Cruce de Friusa stop it is about 20 minutes by Uber or official taxi. From the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo, the Caribe Tours terminal on Avenida 27 de Febrero and the Expreso Bavaro terminal in Gazcue are 10 to 15 minutes away. Adding the city ride and the bus, two people cross half the country for less than a private transfer usually costs for one. In exchange you accept fixed departure times and a stop that is sometimes a street corner rather than a building.

Families and groups: when a private transfer pays off

With three or four people the maths changes, because a private transfer is priced per vehicle and the bus per person. From Punta Cana to Santo Domingo a private transfer usually runs 125 to 200 USD per vehicle, and from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas 200 to 260 USD. For a family of four, the same route by bus costs approx. 30 to 35 USD in total, plus city taxis. The gap is still wide, but the transfer collects you at the hotel door, does not ask you to arrive an hour early and can provide child seats on request. Our rule: with small children or more than one change of vehicle, consider the transfer. With teenagers and reasonable luggage, the bus is the better deal.

Big luggage: what fits in each option

Caribe Tours and Expreso Bavaro coaches have a luggage hold, so one large suitcase and one carry-on per person usually travel without trouble. Association buses, like the Asotrapusa service to Las Terrenas, are smaller vehicles and luggage space is tighter. If you carry a surfboard, a bicycle or more than two large suitcases, ask ahead or go straight to a private transfer. With Uber the limit is the boot of the car you are assigned: with two large suitcases request the higher category, which in Punta Cana is usually called Uber Select. One practical detail: street stops have no left-luggage service, so do not turn up two hours early with everything on your back.

At night and at dawn: taxi, transfer or wait until morning

Intercity buses run in daylight. The first departure is usually early in the morning and the last in mid afternoon, depending on the route, and we never suggest the last departure of the day because it leaves no plan B if something goes wrong. If your flight lands at night in Punta Cana or Las Americas, you have two sensible paths: sleep near the airport and take the bus the next morning, or book a private night transfer. The official airport taxi runs at any hour, but for 200 km the fare gets close to a transfer.
