The Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata bus is run by Caribe Tours and takes about 4 hours for 215 km, passing through Santiago. It leaves from the terminal at Av. 27 de Febrero and Leopoldo Navarro and arrives at the Camino Real street terminal, a few minutes from the Malecon.
Real duration: 4 hours on the Autopista Duarte and through Santiago
The 215 km between Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata take about 4 hours, not the 3 the map suggests. The bus climbs the Autopista Duarte to Santiago, 155 km and about 2 hours 15 minutes away, and from there crosses the Cordillera Septentrional to the north coast on a winding mountain road. That second stretch is what stretches the time. Expect a short stop or two along the way and traffic leaving the capital. If you have a flight out of Puerto Plata the same day, do not chain bus and plane with less than 2 hours of margin on top of those 4 hours, and rule out the last departure of the day as a matter of policy.
How the ticket is paid
The fare in force since the May 2026 increase. This is a figure that changes, so treat it as a reference and confirm at the ticket window. A private transfer on the same route usually costs between 180 and 250 USD per vehicle, so the bus works out around 20 times cheaper per person. There is a ticket window at the terminal, but do not assume card payment will be available: carry pesos in cash. Tickets are bought at the terminal on the day. Its own online booking is limited and the timetables on its website are not always current: check the timetable for your travel day before you set off. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.
The departure terminal in Santo Domingo
The bus leaves from the Caribe Tours terminal at Av. 27 de Febrero and Leopoldo Navarro in central Santo Domingo. From the Colonial Zone it is about 10 to 15 minutes by Uber or taxi, and from Las Americas airport (SDQ) between 25 and 35 minutes depending on traffic. It is a terminal with ticket windows, a waiting room and bays. The operator asks you to arrive 45 minutes before departure to buy your ticket and check luggage, which goes in the hold with a claim tag. Our data shows about 6 departures a day to Puerto Plata, in the morning and early afternoon, but the exact times are pending phone confirmation, so do not treat them as fixed.
The two leg alternative via Santiago
If you want to stop in Santiago, you can split the trip in two: Santo Domingo to Santiago with Caribe Tours, then Santiago to Puerto Plata from the same Las Colinas terminal. So it only pays off if Santiago is part of the plan: the Monument, the historic centre or a night to break the journey. For anyone heading straight to the beach, the 4 hour bus is simpler and cheaper. Both Santiago legs use the same terminal, which makes the connection easy.
Arriving in Puerto Plata and continuing to Sosua and Cabarete
In Puerto Plata the bus arrives at the Caribe Tours terminal on Camino Real street, a few minutes by taxi from the Malecon and the centre. Gregorio Luperon airport (POP) is about 20 minutes away by taxi. If you are heading to Sosua or Cabarete, it takes a bit over half an hour from the terminal by local guagua or taxi, and the taxi is the comfortable choice if you arrive with luggage or after dark.
