Santo Domingo to Santiago by Bus: Terminal and Tips

Why this is the easiest route to start with

Santo Domingo and Santiago are the two largest cities in the country and the corridor between them has the most frequent bus service in our data: Caribe Tours leaves about every hour through the day, so if you miss one departure the next is usually an hour away. That completely changes how you travel compared with routes that have 3 departures a day, where a delay costs you half a day. The departure terminal in Santo Domingo and how to get there

The bus leaves from the Caribe Tours terminal at Av. 27 de Febrero and Leopoldo Navarro, right in central Santo Domingo. From the Colonial Zone it is about 10 to 15 minutes by Uber or taxi, and from Las Americas airport (SDQ) between 25 and 35 minutes depending on traffic. It is a proper terminal with ticket windows, a waiting room and bays, which is not the case on every route in the country. The operator asks you to arrive 45 minutes before departure to buy your ticket and check luggage. A large suitcase goes in the hold and you get a claim tag: keep it, they ask for it when you get off.

Frequency and how tickets are sold

Is bought at the terminal ticket window on the day. There is a ticket window at the terminal, but do not assume card payment will be available: carry pesos in cash for the ticket. Its own online booking is limited and the timetables on its website are not always current, so check the timetable for your travel day at the terminal or by phone rather than trusting an old screenshot. What to expect on board and on the road

The trip follows the Autopista Duarte, the country's main highway, which crosses the mountains between the two cities. Caribe Tours buses are coaches with assigned seats, air conditioning and, on many services, a screen showing a film. The air tends to run cold, so a light jacket helps. The journey usually includes a short intermediate stop or two in towns along the way where passengers get on and off. Keep your hand luggage with you and bring a bottle of water. If you travel with children, the 135 minutes go by quickly, and the mountain scenery of the central stretch is the best part of the ride. Expect to reach Santiago about 2 hours 15 minutes after leaving, a bit more if there is traffic getting out of the capital.

Arriving in Santiago: Las Colinas terminal, airport and the link to Puerto Plata

In Santiago the bus pulls into the Caribe Tours terminal on Av. 27 de Febrero in the Las Colinas area. From there the Monument, the city centre, is about 10 minutes by taxi, and Cibao airport (STI) about 20. If your final destination is the north coast, the Caribe Tours bus to Puerto Plata leaves from this same terminal: 65 km.
