From Las Americas airport (SDQ) to Punta Cana by bus takes about 4 hours in total. First a 25 to 35 minute Uber or taxi ride to the Expreso Bavaro terminal in Gazcue, then around 190 minutes on the coach to Cruce de Friusa, in Bavaro. A direct private transfer costs between 125 and 200 USD approx.
The three ways to make the trip
There are three sensible ways to cover the 200 km between SDQ and the Punta Cana hotel zone. The Expreso Bavaro coach is the cheapest, but it means going through central Santo Domingo, because the airport sits east of the city and the terminal is in Gazcue. A direct private transfer runs from 125 to 200 USD approx. per vehicle and drops you at the hotel with no changes. The third is a rental car, which makes sense if you plan to drive around during your stay. For a couple on a morning flight with no rush, the bus is the one that pays off. We confirm the fare with you before booking, once the seat has been checked with the carrier.
From the airport to the Expreso Bavaro terminal
The airport is 25 to 35 minutes from downtown by Uber or official taxi, depending on traffic on Avenida Las Americas. The Expreso Bavaro terminal is on Calle Juan Sanchez Ramirez, in Gazcue, close to Avenida Maximo Gomez. Tell the driver Expreso Bavaro terminal in Gazcue and they will find it. Request the car from inside the airport and compare the price the app shows with what the taxi drivers at the door quote you. If you leave the international terminal mid morning, expect some traffic on the way into the city.
The bus to Punta Cana: time, fare and payment
The operator covers the 200 km in about 190 minutes. Paid in cash on board, so withdraw pesos at the airport. Expreso Bavaro has no online sales and asks you to be at the terminal 1 hour before departure. According to what the operator publishes, departures are spread through the day roughly every 2 hours and end mid afternoon, without phone confirmation on our side, so check the day's timetable at the terminal or ask us before you fly. The last departure of the day is never a good plan when you are coming off a flight.
Arriving at Cruce de Friusa and the last leg to your hotel
The coach does not go into the hotels. It ends at the Cruce de Friusa stop in Bavaro, a well known junction busy with local guaguas and motoconchos. From there the Bavaro hotels are 15 to 20 minutes by Uber or hotel taxi. Cap Cana and Uvero Alto are further out and the taxi costs noticeably more, which is worth weighing before you choose the bus. Uber Select can drive into the hotel lobby, UberX usually leaves you at the resort gate. Have the hotel name written down, many resorts have similar names and the driver will ask.
